Today we are reviewing Total Spy keylogger. According to its developers the main idea of this software is simplicity. So, let's start.
During the installation we pass through the following windows: Welcome → EULA → Information (this one asks us to uninstall any other keyloggers installed on our PC before using Total Spy) → Select Destination Location → Select Start Menu Folder → Ready to Install → Finish (this window has "Launch Total Spy" checkbox). The list is pretty standard, yet could be less. So we leave the checkbox marked and click "Finish".
What we see next is a window informing about the 12 times we can run the keylogger during the free trial version. We click "Ok" and see the icon of Total Spy in System Tray that we click to open the keylogger's window.
The interface of Total Spy Remote keylogger is really very simple. A tiny window contains calendar, access to three types of reports and only few settings. For viewing of the intercepted information Total Spy keylogger uses standard means of Windows: Notepad and Windows Photo Viewer. Very simple and effective way, we must say.
Total Spy Remote keylogger runs on all the operating systems taking part in our testing, except Windows 10 and Windows Server 2003.
Security is not the strongest point of Total Spy keylogger. It can be accessed by pressing a hotkey combination, yet has no other features listed in "Security" section. Moreover, the log files are no way encrypted, so any PC user that finds a place where Total Spy keylogger stores its logs will be able to view them using above mentioned Notepad and Windows Photo Viewer.
Situation is pretty much the same in "Monitoring" section. Total Spy keylogger logs both functional and typewriter keys, so as the clipboard content. It can make screenshots and allows its user to adjust the period of their making. No System log on/off or inactivity time, no file activity and printed files are logged by Total Spy keylogger.
As for "Online Monitoring", Total Spy keylogger perfectly logs URLs visited in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. That's all in this section. Total Spy keylogger will not show you the URLs visited in Safari and Chrome, both sides of chat conversations, sent or received emails.
The reports made by Total Spy keylogger can't be delivered by any of the means that are present in our testing, so as cleaned automatically. Total Spy will also not allow its users to filter what programs and which users of the same PC to monitor. Yet it will allow its users to perform a search in the reports using the standard means of the Notepad.
There is almost nothing to say about the "Other" section, as Total Spy keylogger has nothing to boast here. It can't react to pre-specified keywords, can't block websites and applications, can't work on schedule and is available in English only.
Summing up we can say that Total Spy keylogger is really a very simple keylogger with only the basic set of features, that may come in handy for monitoring at home.
